MANILA, Philippines – The Supreme Court (SC) hailed the 2017 bar exam topnotchers after the special en banc session on Thursday, April 26.
Committee Chairman Associate Justice Lucas Bersamin announced the results together with the list of successful examinees of the 116th bar exam.
In the 2016 bar exam, all topnotchers came from the provincial law schools, a first without the usual top-performing NCR-based schools. University of San Carlos’ Karen Mae Calam aced the bar with a rating of 89.05%. A record-breaking 59.06% passing rate was hit, 3,747 out of 6,344 passed.
The Philippine bar examinations, dubbed as the most prestigious professional licensure exam in the country for aspiring lawyers, is the only professional exam not handled by the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC). It is exclusively supervised by the Supreme Court.
The examination covered the following topics and their associated subtopics, popularly known as the bar subjects: Political Law and Public International Law, Labor and Social Legislation, Civil Law, Taxation, Mercantile Law, Criminal Law, Remedial law and Legal and Judicial Ethics.
