Floyd vs Ortiz will be biggest PPV event of 2011 ?

Golden Boy Promotions’ chief executive officer Richard Schaefer is confident that the upcoming Floyd Mayweather Jr-Victor Ortiz bout will be the biggest pay-per-view (PPV) event of the year. Schaefer told BoxingScene.com that Mayweather-Ortiz will be “the most heavily promoted fight in the history of boxing.” “I looked back at the marketing plan they had for (Oscar) dela Hoya and Mayweather, and I swear to you, it pales to that,” Schaefer said. Dela Hoya and Mayweather’s 2007 bout generated a record 2.5 million PPV buys. “You have the most skilled (boxer) of our generation and you have a young man which I think is a very tough opponent, who has an amazing story, an amazing personality. All that is why I’m convinced that this will be the biggest pay-per-view event of this year,” he said. So far, the most successful PPV event of 2011 was Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao’s fight against Shane Mosley, which generated 1.3 million PPV buys. The Mayweather-Ortiz bout will take place on September 17 in Las Vegas. It will be Mayweather’s first bout after a 16-month break from the sport.
