Len Wiseman, the director of the first two “Underworld” installments and the creator of the franchise, was too busy with other commitments, including helming the upcoming remake of “Total Recall” (starring Beckinsale), so he chose not to direct the film. However, “he was involved in everything from production design to writing the script and casting the film,” says Gary Lucchesi, president of Lakeshore Entertainment. Wiseman also happens to be Beckinsale’s husband. The two met in 2003 on the set of the first “Underworld,” which also stars Michael Sheen, Beckinsale’s former companion; Sheen and Beckinsale have a daughter together. In keeping with the time-honored British tradition of maintaining civility with one’s ex, Sheen went on to star in “Underworld: Evolution” and “Underworld: Rise of the Lycans” right alongside Beckinsale. “Underworld Awakening,” the fourth film of the celebrated franchise, opens this weekend in spectacular 3D, with hopes of taking the No. 1 spot at the box office. Marlind and Stein have known each other since they were kids, and they’ve developed an unorthodox system in which each man directs on alternate days. When one is directing, the other serves as “best buddy” while also answering all the cast and crew’s questions which aren’t immediately pressing. It sounds crazy, but apparently it works. “I don’t know how I’m going to go back to having one director,” says Beckinsale. “By trading off, they are able to stay incredibly excited to have their turn. They never get burned out. I’m married to a director, so I realize that it’s such a miserably nonstop job. There are always 50 people asking you questions. With a partner to answer those questions, the one who’s directing can stay focused on the actors and the shot at hand.” One new plot twist involves the storyline that (Spoiler alert) Selene wakes up from a cryogenically frozen state to discover that she has a teenage daughter, Eve, who is part Lycan and part vampire. Eve is played by India Eisley (“The Secret Life of an American Teenager”), who auditioned on the first day of casting and overcame stiff competition. After her audition, Eisley was getting refreshments in a Santa Monica coffee shop when none other than Beckinsale and Wiseman walked in. When Beckinsale saw Eisley, “She turned to Len, and said, ‘Look at that girl,'” says Eisley. “‘You should go ask her if she wants to be in the movie. She’s like a mini me.’ And he told her, ‘We just saw her audition tape.'”
