Gwendolyn Ruais, who won the Miss World Philippines beauty pageant last night, Sept. 18, aims to become the first Filipina to win the Miss World title.
“I really want to bring home the crown for the Philippines, you know, make us proud. We’ve never won [the] Miss World [title] before and that really is my goal,” Ruais told GMA News in a post-pageant interview held at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC).
“Salamat po siyempre sa lahat ng supporters ko and sa family ko and friends. I love you all and thank you so much for the support,” she added.
The Miss World title was formerly given out during the Binibining Pilipinas pageants, where it was formerly known as Binibining Pilipinas-World. This year is the first time the pageant—now called Miss World Philippines—was held independently of Binibining Pilipinas.
As the first Miss World Philippines title holder, Ruais’ prize includes P 1,000,000.00 cash and a brand new condominium unit.
Aside from winning the pageant’s highest title, she also won the Best in Swimsuit special award.
Meanwhile, Ruais was followed by First Princess Nicolette Henson, Second Princess and Miss Kapuso World Martha Chloe McCulley, Third Princess Maria Paula Bianca Paz and Fourth Princess Jaysel Arrozal.
As Miss Kapuso World, McCulley will be given a two-year management contract for TV and film by the Kapuso network, according to a report on “Unang Hirit” on Monday. She was also adjudged Miss SMDC.
Meanwhile, winners of other special awards were Ma. Paula Bianca Paz (Best in Evening Gown), Rogelie Catacutan (Miss World Friendship and Best in Talent), Samantha Neville Purvor (Miss World Philippines Photogenic), Delby Bragais (Best in Fashion Design) and Richelle Therese Borja (Miss Sheridan).
During the Q&A, Ruais and the other candidates were asked what they would do with P1,000,000.00 cash prize should they win the competition.
“If I win this pageant, I would put part of the money into the bank for the future. Another part of it I would throw a thanksgiving party to thank all the people who helped me in this experience, and the rest I would put into making my own charity program within the Tuloy Street Foundation, which is the official foundation of the Miss World Philippines. Thank you,” Ruais said.
Ruais is slated to compete in the Miss World 2011 pageant on Nov. 6 at the Earls Court Exhibition Centre in London.
