Azkals start training for Kuwait match

The Philippine Azkals began the first phase of their training for their FIFA World Cup qualifier against Kuwait. The Nationals are coming off a 4-day break after advancing to the second round of the qualifiers via a 4-0 victory over Sri Lanka. “Ito ang unang training day namin para sa Kuwait. S’yempre paghahandaan namin ng husto at kelangan mag-train ng mas maigi pa,” said Azkals co-captain Chieffy Caligdong. “Hindi biro [ang Kuwait] para sa amin,” he added. The Azkals expect a tough match against the higher-ranked Kuwait Al-Azraq squad. Kuwait is 102nd in the FIFA world rankings while the Philippines is 159th. The Azkals will have 2 training sessions every day under the watchful eyes of German coach Hans Michael Weiss. Their morning sessions are held at the Alabang Country Club followed by afternoon training sessions at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium. Next weekend, they will fly to Bahrain to begin their acclimatization for their away game in Hawalli, Kuwait on July 23. Guirado, Younghusband recuperate Meanwhile, ANC sports anchor Boyet Sison reported that Azkals strikers Angel Guirado and Phil Younghusband are slowly recovering from the injuries they sustained in the game against Sri Lanka. “Angel Guirado, slowly but surely, is recovering from injuries encountered in Sri Lanka, as well as Phil Younghusband,” he said. The team management is also bringing in Jason de Jong, Jerry Lucena, Ray Jonsson and Patrick Hinrichsen to beef up the Azkals in the absence of Aly Borromeo and Stephan Schrock. Borromeo and Schrock were suspended 1 game after getting 2 yellow cards each in the qualifier versus Sri Lanka. Sison said Borromeo and Schrock are still waiting for the final ruling on their suspension.
