Ateneo turned back Far Eastern University, 82-64, in Game 1 of the UAAP men’s basketball finals

source: gmanews.tv In a ferocious display of firepower, Ateneo turned back Far Eastern University, 82-64, in Game 1 of the UAAP men’ sbasketball finals on Saturday to move closer to winning a fourth straight title. With pinpoint passing, aided by FEU’s defensive breakdowns, the Blue Eagles outscored the Tamaraws in the third, 27-16, to finally gain control of the match after a tightly-fought first half. Nico Salva finished a perfect 8-of-8 from the field to finish with 24 points and six rebounds. Kiefer Ravena showed FEU why he is this year’s Rookie of the Year when he tallied 17 points, five rebounds, four assists and two steals. A relatively quiet Greg Slaughter, Ateneo’s big man, aroused the predominantly blue-clad crowd in the fourth quarter with a dunk via an alley-oop pass from bleach-blonde guard Kirk Long. The Tamaraws, who won three straight games including twice against Adamson in the Final Four phase, seemed headed for an upset when they dictated the tempo of the match for most of the first half. FEU even led by 10 at one point midway in the second period. Ateneo coach Norman Black, however, made some adjustments and made a mini run to tie the count at 33-all at halftime. — JVP, GMA News
